Resource Portal (resource 1)
PBS Learning Media: Global Oneness Project: Building a Community of Trust
Url: Global Oneness Project
Finding: I found this idea a while back when I was in seminar and I have been using the idea of global oneness as a unit plan. I found this specific lesson when looking for inspiration for this final project by searching "Global Oneness" and I thought that for the age level this topic would be really interesting for the students to work with.
Use: This is where I found the video link that inspired the lesson so I would have students watch this video, discuss it and then start applying it to their own lives and building a piece around it.
Standards: - VA:Re10.1.5a- Identify how art is used to inform or change an individual’s or society’s beliefs, values, or behaviors.
PLN Resource:
Name: Global Oneness Project ( Twitter)
Url: Twitter Account
Finding: I found this twitter handle when I was doing our PLN project early this week. I was really excited because if you couldn't tell I LOVE the concept!
Use: I would use this twitter page as a way for students to get interested in the Global Oneness idea. I think I would ask them to explore the page and get and understanding for the concept before we start the project so they have a general idea of what I'm looking for.
Standard:- VA:Re7.2.5a- Identify and analyze cultural associations suggested by visual imagery.
Resource 3:
Name: Michigan Youth Violence Prevention Center
URL: MI-YVPC
Finding: I found this when looking into the youth violence prevention.
Use: I would use this website as a starting point for students. They can look around the website and see what we are doing in Michigan the prevent youth violence and then they can build their own ideas off of what they find.
Standards:
- VA:Re1.1.5a-Combineideas to generate
an innovative idea for art-making
- VA:Re1.2.5a-
Identify and demonstrate diverse methods of artistic investigation to choose
and approach for beginning a work of art.

ReplyDeleteI would first like to say that I LOVE your focus for this lesson. I think that for your grade level, it is a much-needed lesson, middle school is such a hard time for so many kids, and having this extra focus will really make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot of things while exploring all your different resources; the Global Oneness Project was a really cool site to play around on. I watched the video and thought that the message itself was pretty amazing, and depending on the type of environments that these students are coming from this could really make an impact. The only thing that put up a couple red flags was the subtitles, they moved a little fast and my only concern would be the students not being able to keep up with what is being said. Other then that one thing, I think that the resource itself could be very helpful within this lesson, and I believe the standard goes nicely with the video, because of what they talk about in the video. The twitter account is another great resource. I think that it is a good idea to let them explore and read the different articles and stories that are ‘tweeted’. However, they are middle school students, and I am sure that they have been on twitter once or twice. With that I would just like you to think about how you might limit the students exploration on other accounts not related to Global Oneness Project. To go along with that Twitter has a tendency to post “suggested accounts” or “promoted tweets” so again this could pull away from the main focus of this resource. I do like your idea of using Twitter as a resource; I think that with the age of students you will be teaching this resource will really speak to them. Although I would encourage you to think a little more about the logistics of how you may keep them focused on the topic. Your last resource, Michigan Youth Prevention Center is another really cool resource for the kids to explore. I really enjoyed looking at the different projects students could do to prevent violence, and I think that the students would really like to see what other students are doing in Michigan. I like this resource choice a lot, because it brings this topic closer to home, where they students can see what is happening in the areas around them.
Subtitles are better than no subtitles, and hopefully there is a pause feature if they do scroll too quickly. And yes, any social media use can involve ads or suggestions that may not be helpful or appropriate. Specific information can be copy/pasted, and you could also use screenshots to control the message.
